The 2024 Gabri Award Recipients

Melissa Smith

Melissa Smith Axelrad first learned of Everybody Dance LA! when she met her now-husband, Joe, son of EDLA! Founder. Liza Bercovici. and Gabri’s brother.  Inspired by Gabri’s legacy and the vibrant Everybody Dance community, Melissa enthusiastically joined EDLA!’s board in 2019. A labor and employment attorney by trade, She chairs EDLA!’s Governance Committee and is a member of the Risk and Strategic Communications Committees.

Melissa was raised in Syracuse, New York, and moved to Los Angeles to attend law school. Throughout her life, Melissa has remained committed to fostering meaningful ties to her community, something she credits to her loving parents and siblings and her Upstate New York roots. Aside from her professional and charitable responsibilities, Melissa relishes her role as a mother to her and Joe’s three children, ages 7, 5, and 2. Raising her young family in Los Angeles, Melissa sees firsthand the way that high-quality arts and extracurricular activities, like the exceptional dance instruction provided by EDLA!, build character in children and create a vital sense of purpose and belonging not only for the students but also for their families and their communities. Melissa has never been prouder to be part of EDLA! She is exceedingly grateful to her friends and family, especially her husband Joe, for generously and graciously supporting EDLA! alongside her.

The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation

Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert immigrated from England to Los Angeles in 1949 and became real estate investors. During their lifetime, they were committed to charitable endeavors while assembling one of the world’s preeminent decorative arts collections. Their deep connection to the arts continues today through their Foundation, which supports arts education and outreach programs, college access, diabetes, Alzheimer’s research, and Jewish life.

The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation has been a steadfast partner of Everybody Dance LA! Together, they have been instrumental in ensuring that all youth in Los Angeles have equal opportunities to access high-quality dance education, a testament to the Foundation’s commitment to community engagement and empowerment.
